Kalashnikov Experience in Ethiopia

It was about time to have a long and adventurous ride to Semera from where I and newly met friends would go to explore Danakil Depression, Dallol, and Earta Volcano. The journey started in the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa. The reliable and comfy jeep only added to the enjoyment of the ride. After a few hours we stopped at one of the several villages to rest and have a local meal, and of course, taste the traditional sweet tea. It seemed like the possession of firearms was not only fully accepted but allowed to be carried in public.

Halfway through our journey, my friendly and helpful guide invited an off-duty police officer to join us. One thing led to another, and a deal was sealed. For ‘quick buck’ I was permitted to hold an AK47 and at the nearest opportunity to fire a gun in a safe environment. I must admit it was my first contact with firearms. Ok, maybe with the exception of the sports shooting range in North Korea. Yep, it was one of the attractions in that part of Asia.

After instructions and precautions were made, I fired and felt it firmly on my shoulder. And the loud noise was also part of the experience. Did I enjoy it? More like a thing to tick off. All in all, I have received enough reassurance and encouragement from other participants of this journey.
