Baab Makkah Jeddah Gate, Saudi Arabia

This beautiful site stands tall at the start of the road leading to the holiest city for Muslims, Makkah. Baab Makkah has witnessed hundreds of millions of pilgrims journey to Muhammed’s hometown. This is a three-arched gateway with a large turret on each side, providing support and entrance from Jeddah to Makkah.

It serves as a historic monument in one of the oldest areas of Jeddah and has been preserved with great care since the 1940s when the wall around Makkah was torn down. When you look at this majestic structure, you can tell that it would have been impenetrable in its heyday.

This is one of Jeddah’s old gates of the northern wall and is located north of the Al-Sham neighborhood, which was later demolished. This gate was used to reach the Al-Qishla military barracks and was also accessed by travelers journeying to and from Madinah and Makkah.
