My Everest Base Camp Adventure: Then and Now

In 2017, I embarked on an incredible journey to Everest Base Camp with a group of fellow adventurers. As I look back on that experience, I’m reminded of the Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) card that was mandatory for our trek. Fast forward to today, and I’ve noticed some changes in the permit system that might be useful for fellow trekkers to know.

Changes in the Permit System

Since my trek in 2017, the permit system has undergone some changes. The TIMS card has been replaced by the Trek Card, a digital permit system that’s designed to provide trekkers with more information about the region. Additionally, there are new permit requirements, including:

  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit: NPR 2000 per person (valid for 4 weeks), with an additional NPR 500 for stays longer than 4 weeks
  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: NPR 3000 per person + 13% VAT for foreigners
  • Gauri Shankar Conservation Area Permit (GSCAP): NPR 2000 per person + 13% VAT for 30 days (required for treks from Jiri to Everest Base Camp)

Yushan National Park Permit

In 2018, I attempted to conquer Yushan’s Jade Main Peak, and one of the most crucial steps was obtaining the necessary permits. The application process was done online, and I had to chase for a limited slot, which was available only for a certain number of people each day. Fast forward to today, and the process has become more streamlined.

Then (2018)

  • Online Application: The permit application process was done online, and applicants had to compete for a limited number of slots each day.
  • Limited Spaces: The number of permits available for each day was limited, making it challenging to secure a spot.
  • Unpredictable: The application process was unpredictable, and it was difficult to determine whether you would get a permit or not.

Now (2024-2025)

  • Streamlined Process: The online application system has become more efficient, allowing applicants to fill out the required information and submit their applications more easily.
  • Advanced Application for Foreigners: Foreigners can apply for permits in advance, securing a spot without going through the lottery system. There are 24 special spaces allotted for non-Taiwanese passport holders.
  • Two Permits Required: To hike Yushan, you’ll need to obtain two permits: the Park Entry Permit and the Mountain Entry (Police) Permit. The police permit can be arranged on the spot or online.
  • Application Timeline: Applications can be submitted 3 to 124 days prior to the entry date. For foreigners, applications can be made 4 months to 35 days in advance.

Tips for Obtaining Permits

  • Plan Ahead: Make sure to apply for permits well in advance, especially during peak season.
  • Check Availability: Verify the availability of permits and lodge spaces before submitting your application.
