Quirks of Hargeisa, Somaliland

Money Market
The money market in Hargeisa is known for its unique way of trading money, where shoppers sit in rows and trade money in kilograms. The local currency, the Somaliland shilling, is not just used for transactions but is also traded as an item. These shoppers sit in orderly rows, not to barter for produce or goods, but to engage in the unexpected trade of money itself. This is not a fantasy but a reality that has unfolded for years in this small African nation.

The value of the shilling has decreased dramatically against the US dollar over the years. For example, in 2000, 10,000 shillings was equal to one US dollar, but today one US dollar is worth around 600 shillings. People in the money market openly display and exchange money without fear of theft or robbery. Cash-filled wheelbarrows are equivalent to the price of bread and cold drinks.
Here is the video footage of my visit.

Livestock Market
Camel is the main domestic animal in Somaliland (the other being the goat). It’s also often a way of transportation and a meal. Hargiesa boasts one of the largest and most unique camel markets in the Horn of Africa. Hundreds of animals are for sale here with men mostly trading camels and women congregating around camels.

Everybody chews the narcotic khat to help with trading decisions. It’s dusty, hectic, and noisy, and a tourist with a camera was most definitely an unseen novelty. Watch the video from my visit here.

Beerta Libaaxyada
Hidden away down a residential side road that runs south from Barbera Road opposite the Bandare hotel this private establishment the Somali name really means Lion Garden – contains about six caged lions, originally imported from Etiohopia by the gov that owns them. The other is one solitary cheetah that seemed to be sedated most of the day. To animal lovers, this place can be truly depressing. The conditions for these wild animals are deteriorating with each year. More importantly, the security and safety these animals pose to local residents is questionable. Several incidents of lions escaping the enclosure and harming people.

The caretakers I met there were friendly and welcoming. They showed me around and recommended tourist attractions.

Lion’s Stage where live music is performed and social events organised.

Here you will find a video tour of my visit to Lion’s Garden
