Amound University in Borama, Somaliland

Borama (Somali: Boorama, Arabic: بورما) is the largest city in the northwestern Awdal region of Somaliland. The town is located near the border with Ethiopia. During the Middle Ages, Borama was ruled by the Adal Sultanate. It later formed a part of the British Somaliland protectorate in the first half of the 20th century.

Amoud University has a rich history spanning over several decades. Established in 1952 as a secondary school, it evolved into a fully fledged university in 1997. It produced some of the best minds in the Somali-speaking regions of the Horn.  The university is deeply rooted within the local community due to primary support from community elders, business people, and local non-governmental organizations.

The university started with 66 students in two faculties (Business Administration and Education) and three teachers. It has now a student population of 5111 enrolled in 14 faculties, and 238 teaching staff. The first medical graduates came out in June 2007 and their final exams were supervised by King’s College of London, UK, which provided the curriculum and teaching assistance to the Amoud University College of Health Sciences.
The library of Amoud University is regarded as one of the best university libraries in the Horn of Africa. Over the past decade, we have collected over 120,000 volumes to support teaching, learning, and research.

At Amoud University, Culture Week is the annual celebration that showcases the beauty and diversity of Somali poetry, literature, and African cultural heritage. The students also have the prayer room at their disposal.
